What the full name tester checks

Initials and monogram

Initials end up on backpacks, towels and email addresses. We check the initials in order (first, middle, last), the classic monogram (first, a large last initial, then middle), and first plus last on their own. We compare them against a hand-picked list of words and abbreviations to avoid, like P.I.G. or S.O.S., and a list of sweet ones, like A.M.Y. or J.O.Y.

Syllable rhythm

Names with different syllable counts in each part, like 2-1-3, tend to sound natural. Three one-syllable parts can sound abrupt, and very long names often get shortened. Neither is wrong. It depends on the sound you want.

Sound clashes

When one name ends with the sound the next one starts with (Liam Mills), the two run together. Rhyming parts (Molly Polly) and vowel-to-vowel joins (Ava Abbott) can blur too. We use the same phonetics as our name generator.

Popularity

Each first and middle name is ranked against the latest US Social Security data, and the last name against the 2010 US Census. A very popular first name with a common surname means your child may share their full name with classmates.

Sibling fit

We look for sibling names that rhyme, share a first letter or a final sound, and for big differences in style or popularity, like a top-10 name next to a very rare one.

Questions

Is the score a rating of the name?

No. Every name can be lovely. The score only counts possible snags, like unfortunate initials or names that slur together, so you can spot them before the birth certificate.

Which initials do you flag?

A curated list of English words and abbreviations that read badly (like PIG, BUM or SOS), common acronyms that may cause teasing, and sweet words like JOY or AMY, which we count as a bonus.

What about two middle names?

Type both in the middle name box with a space between them. We check the initials with both middles and with just the first one.

Do you store the names I test?

No. Names are checked on our server and not saved. If you tap This is the one, the name is saved only in your browser for the Baby Kit.
